The Japy family's clockmaking legacy began with Frédéric Japy (1749-1812), a pioneering figure in French horology. The company Japy Frères (Japy Brothers) was formally established by Frédéric's sons in the early 19th century, continuing after his death in 1812. The company became renowned for industrial innovation, including creating interchangeable components and ebauches (blank movements to supply to other clockmakers in Europe).
